What is a 504 Plan?

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (the precursor of ADA) protects the rights of individuals with disabilities in programs and activities, including schools, that receive federal funds. Section 504 provides that: "No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States . . . shall, solely by reason of her or his disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance . . ." The meaning of this protection as regards students with disabilities is summarized in the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights's publication: "".

How does the process work at Thurston Middle School?

Guidance Counselors at Thurston Middle School support the implementation of Section 504 plan. 504 plans are designed to give students with disabilities equal access to the general education curriculum.

The guidance department works with a student's teachers, family members and the student themselves to create a plan that suits the student's individual needs.

If you have questions about 504 plans, please contact your child's guidance counselor.
